New Labour, new morality

The Tory Party is a lost cause, devoid of principles, morality, humanity… UK voters have experienced first hand how, over the past 14 years, the entire economy has been driven into the ground, while a few elite parasites have enriched themselves at the expense of the poorest and most vulnerable. With society on its knees, those in power continue to display not an ounce of integrity or empathy. Corrupt and incompetent.

As a result, with its unassailable lead in the polls, and a very ugly alternative for voters, the Labour party is all but guaranteed a landslide victory in the next general election. So there couldn’t be a better time to put forward a truly progressive agenda that reflects the values at the heart of the Labour movement – fairness, compassion… humanity. Now is the time to talk about building a better society, backed by policies that don’t simply serve those lobbying the loudest. This should be Labour’s time to shine.

So why, exactly, has every single commitment towards a better, fairer society, been abandoned. Why has Labour discarded all its pledges, principles and morality, and betrayed party members and supporters in such a callous way, leaving life-long Labour voters without an option that doesn’t just look exactly like the Conservatives with different faces. Is this what Kier’s brave new world looks like?

Perhaps this sellout is not a surprise, given the eagerness with which Starmer threw himself into the ludicrous antisemitism witch hunt that saw the political assassination of Jeremy Corbyn. Or perhaps the oil lobby is just too powerful to permit a green economy to emerge. Whichever lobby put him into power is perhaps, now, demanding its quid pro quo?

But, the final nail in Labour’s moral coffin must surely be its leaders’ indifference to the slaughter of innocents in Gaza. Not a word of opposition raised in parliament or anywhere else… instead shoulder to shoulder with a Tory government complicit in the most horrific assault on a civilian population that most of us have seen in our lifetimes. While a brutal extreme right-wing regime unapologetically brags about its war crimes, streaming snuff movies on Telegram to its fanatical Fascist supporters, and celebrating the slaughter on TikTok with grotesque parodies of Palestinian children and families… mocking the plight of the ‘vermin’… silence from the Labour benches. The trumped up charges against Palestine’s only relief agency, UNWRA that, due to the West’s withdrawal of funding, will likely drive thousands of children into starvation… not a word. Starmer’s Labour is now, just like the Tories, morally bankrupt.

I have, my whole life, supported and admired the Labour party for its humanity and compassion, as a home for people who care about other humans, regardless of their race – a party that cares about the most vulnerable. With a few exceptions, such as Tony Blair’s shameful support for a deranged George W Bush and his project to destroy the Iraqi culture and destabilise an entire region, or the eagerness to privatise all the profitable parts of the NHS, for example, the Labour party has, basically, been a force for good.

Not any more.
